On Thursday, September 26, 2008, acclaimed actor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Paul Newman passed away in his Connecticut home at the age of 83. Paul Newman was born January 26, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University and served in the US Navy during World War II, after which he enrolled at Kenyon College. After attending the Yale School of Drama, Newman left college to pursue his career in acting. Throughout his extensive career, Newman appeared in more than 50 films, including The Hustler (1961), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He received twenty-two nominations from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, resulting in nine Oscar nominations and two wins—for his performance in the 1986 film The Color of Money, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. Off the set, Paul Newman established the non-profit organization Newman’s Own in 1982, a line of gourmet food products and other items that have provided more than $420 million in proceeds to charitable organizations since its foundation. He was a passionate advocate for children’s health through the Hole in the Wall camps, a chain of no-cost summer camps for children diagnosed with cancer, as well as other philanthropic causes. He is survived by his wife Joanne Woodward, his five daughters, and 10 grandchildren.
