Rosa Luxemburg, born 5 March 1871, passed away on 15 January 1919. She was an influential Marxist theorist, philosopher, economist, anti-war activist, and revolutionary socialist. Throughout her lifetime, Luxemburg campaigned for human liberation and workers' rights. This included writing her famous essays: The Accumulation of Capital, Women's Suffrage and Social Reform, and Reform or Revolution. She was a vocal opponent of World War I, publishing several anti-war essays and leading a series of, often unsuccessful, strikes against the war. Luxemburg's spirited activism led her to numerous arrests and incarcerations. It was during one such spell in prison that she wrote her most famous work, The Russian Revolution. This was her examination of the war, which, although reflecting her Marxist ideology, argued that the Bolsheviks had used authoritarian methods to take control of the October Revolution. Rosa Luxemburg was an unparalleled activist, brilliant theorist, and an iconic figure in Marxist history. She will be remembered for her determined defense of workers’ rights, her unwavering beliefs, and her substantial contributions to the Marxist ideology.
