Dr. Russell M. Nelson, a renowned medical pioneer and religious leader, passed away on September 27, 2025, at the age of 101. He was born on September 9, 1924, to Marion C. and Flossie W. Nelson in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Nelson was a highly accomplished surgeon, educator, and researcher. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Utah and completed his surgical training at the University of Minnesota. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to the medical field, particularly in the areas of thoracic surgery and organ transplantation. He also served as the president of the Society for Vascular Surgery. In addition to his medical achievements, Dr. Nelson was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as an apostle for the church for over 34 years and was one of its senior leaders. He traveled the world, delivering powerful messages of faith and hope to millions of people. Throughout his life, Dr. Nelson was known for his compassion, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to helping others. He selflessly devoted his time and talents to serving his community and those in need. Dr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Wendy L. Nelson, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage, as well as their 10 children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to live on through his numerous contributions to the fields of medicine and religion, and the lives he touched along the way. Dr. Russell M. Nelson will always be remembered as a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on this world.
