Ryuichi Sakamoto, a prominent composer, pianist, and actor, died on March 28th, 2023 at the age of 71. Sakamoto was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1952 and grew up attending Tokyo University of the Arts. He soon established himself as a pioneer in the world of experimental and electronic music, becoming a founding member of the influential Yellow Magic Orchestra. Throughout the decades, Sakamoto's accolades include an Academy Award in 1987 for Best Original Score for his work in the film The Last Emperor, collaboration with other renowned composers such as David Byrne and working on soundtracks for movies such as The Revenant. He also made his acting debut in 1983 in the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Sakamoto's physical works have been exhibited in galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He also wrote several books and created installations related to technology and nature. His second solo album, Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto is considered a pioneering work in electronic music. He received the Praemium Imperiale award in 2010 and the Japanese government’s highest Order of the Rising Sun distinction in the same year. Ryuichi Sakamoto is survived by his son, two brothers, and a wide variety of fans worldwide.
