Saalumarada Thimmakka, a prominent environmentalist and social activist, passed away on November 14, 2025 at the age of 114. Born in 1911 in Hulikal village, Karnataka, Thimmakka grew up in poverty and had no formal education. Despite her humble beginnings, Thimmakka became known for her tireless efforts in the preservation of nature and the improvement of her community. She and her husband, Sri Bikkalal Balaram, planted and cared for over 300 banyan trees along a four kilometer stretch of road between Hulikal and Kudur. These trees, known as the Thimmakka Trees, have become a symbol of her dedication to the environment. Thimmakka's work did not go unnoticed, as she received multiple awards and recognitions for her contributions. She was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2019 for her environmental activism. She also received the National Citizens Award from the Government of India in 2013 and the Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra Award in 2011. Aside from her environmental work, Thimmakka was also actively involved in various social causes, working towards the betterment of her community. She was a strong advocate for the education of girls and helped establish a school in her village. Thimmakka's legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Her selfless dedication to preserving the environment and improving the lives of others serves as a reminder of the impact that one person can have on the world. She will be remembered as a true role model, and her contributions will be cherished for years to come. Saalumarada Thimmakka is survived by her two sons, four daughters, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, as well as the countless individuals who have been touched by her remarkable life and legacy. May her soul rest in peace.
