Sabine Schmitz, a beloved master race car driver, passed away on 16 March 2021 after bravely fighting cancer. She was only 51 years old. Born in Germany on 14 May 1969, Sabine was an avid motorsport enthusiast from a young age, trained as an apprentice in a BMW dealership where her father worked. She competed in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 1996, becoming the first woman ever to win the race. She quickly gained fame and appeared in the BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ show many times, driving the famed ‘ring taxi’, and setting several impressive lap records. Sabine was famous for her no-nonsense attitude, fearlessness, and enthusiasm for the race track. She truly left her mark on the world of motorsports, and will be greatly missed.
