Salvatore Schillaci, a former professional footballer for the Italian national team, passed away on September 18, 2024 at the age of 59. Born on December 1, 1964 in Palermo, Italy, Schillaci began his football career in 1980 with their local team, Juventus. He went on to join various other Italian teams, including Messina, Juventus, Inter Milan, and AS Roma. However, it was during his time at Juventus that Schillaci's talents caught the attention of the Italian national team. He made his international debut in 1989 and soon became a key player for the team. Schillaci's impressive performance in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where he scored six goals and won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer, solidified his place in Italian football history. He also won the Bronze Ball as the third-best player in the tournament and helped lead Italy to a third-place finish. Schillaci's success continued with the national team, as he played in the 1992 UEFA European Championship and helped Italy reach the final. In total, he scored 15 goals in 16 appearances for the Italian national team. After retiring from football in 1998, Schillaci pursued a career as a coach, managing various Italian teams including Messina, Catanzaro, and Syracuse. He also worked as a TV pundit for football matches. Schillaci will be remembered as a prolific scorer and a beloved member of the Italian football community. His contributions to the sport and the national team will not be forgotten. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
