Sarojini Naidu

Indian politician, governor of the united provinces of agra and oudh from 1947 to 1949.

Born February 13th, 1879 in Hyderabad.

Died March 2nd, 1949 at 70 years old in Lucknow (myocardial infarction).

Sarojini Naidu was a noted Indian independence activist and poet. She was born into a politically active family, and her father was the first Muslim to be elected to the Indian parliament. Naidu was educated at a women's college in England, and returned to India in the early 1900s. She quickly became involved in the struggle for Indian independence, and was jailed on several occasions. Naidu was also an accomplished poet, and her work celebrated the beauty of India and its people. After independence was achieved in 1947, Naidu served as the first governor of the state of Uttar Pradesh. She died in 1949 at the age of 70.
