Shelley Winters (1922 - 2006) passed away in Los Angeles, California on January 14, 2006 at the age of 85. Born Shirley Schrift in St. Louis, Missouri, Shelley began her acting career in the 1940s, appearing on Broadway and gaining her first Hollywood role in 1947. She earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1948's "A Double Life," and then won the Best Supporting Actress award for 1959's "The Diary of Anne Frank." Winters also was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 1960's "The Whole Truth" and again in 1962 for "Lolita." Her film career spanned over six decades, appearing in over 200 films, such as classic films like "A Place in the Sun," "The Night of the Hunter," and "The Poseidon Adventure," and adaptations of Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, and William Inge plays. Winters was an accomplished actress, performing in both comedies and dramas, and collecting two Emmys, a Golden Globe, and two Cannes Film Festival awards along the way. Shelley is preceded in death by her long time husband, Vittorio Gassman. She is survived by her children Vittorio and Paula Gassman, and her two siblings, Parfrey and Ralph Schrift. She will be remembered for her prolific film career and long-lived contributions to the film industry.
