We mourn the loss of Sister Nivedita, who passed away on 13 October 1911 at the age of 43. Sister Nivedita, born Margaret Elizabeth Noble, was an Irish-born social worker, author, and teacher who was based in India. For over a decade, she dedicated her life to the service of India’s people in various ways, including working for the betterment of Indian women, serving as a political aide, writing books about Indian culture and religion, and providing famine relief. She also established and worked for a school in Calcutta, becoming a pioneer in opening education opportunities to Indian girls. Sister Nivedita was widely received and respected by Indians, Spanish, Irish, and Indian-Americans, and her dedication to Indian cultural and social reform was unwavering throughout her life. She will be remembered as a true woman of service and for her relentless commitment to India's people.
