Soupy Sales, a beloved comedian born Milton Supman in 1926, died on October 22nd, 2009 at the age of 83. Sales was best known for his slapstick comedy and pie-in-the-face shtick on TV shows in the 1950s and early 1960s. After gaining fame by appearing on TV shows such as The Steve Allen Show and The Ed Sullivan Show, he created two of his own TV shows, The Soupy Sales Show and Lunch With Soupy Sales. Sales was born in Franklinton, North Carolina, in 1926, and was raised in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended Marshall University and served in the Navy during WWII. Following his release from the service, he began acting, performing political satire and impressions on The Haney and Davis Show in Detroit. In 1948, Sales relocated to Los Angeles and started writing for comedians including Lou Costello, Phil Silvers, and Red Skelton. His writing eventually brought him to television, first as a writer and then as a performer. Outside of his work on television, Sales released two comedy albums, created a novelty record, appeared in films, and wrote a book. He also made several guest appearances on late-night talk shows, most recently appearing as a guest on Late Show with David Letterman in 2005. Sales is survived by two sons, a daughter, and several grandchildren.
