Tarek Fatah, cultural activist and outspoken advocate of secularism and human rights, died on April 24, 2023 at the age of 73 in Toronto, Canada. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Mr. Fatah was raised in the United Arab Emirates and later moved to Canada in 1987. His early career within the Canadian media in South Asian programming quickly earned him recognition and popularity. From 1996 to 2013, Mr. Fatah was a host and producer on CityTV's SunTV. He was also a frequent contributor to newspapers, focusing on topics such as international relations, pluralism, and global security. During his career, Mr. Fatah was awarded both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Order of Ontario. Mr. Fatah was a passionate advocate of secularism and the empowerment of women through his work with the Muslim Canadian Congress and Pakistan-India People's Forum for Peace and Democracy. He was also an outspoken critic of terrorism, religious extremism, and religious bigotry. His opinions often put him in opposition to conservative media and religious authorities, making him a frequent target for defamation and death threats. Mr. Fatah was a strong believer in dialogue and diplomacy, serving as a mediator and negotiator of cross-cultural discussions. A mentor to many, Mr. Fatah believed in the need for diversity and human rights for all. He will be remembered for his lasting impact on Canadian media, politics, and society at large.
