The actor Ted Knight, best known for his roles in when the Circus Came to Town and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has passed away at the age of 62 on August 26th, 1986. Born Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka in Terryville, Connecticut, Knight began his career in acting at the age of 25, and made guest appearances in shows such as Wagon Train and Perry Mason before taking on his first major role in the 1966 film When the Circus Came to Town. In 1970, Knight landed his most iconic role as Ted Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, for which he earned three Emmy Award nominations. He later went on to play Judge Elihu Smails in Caddyshack, voicing the Narrator in Animaniacs, and Chester the wisecrackin' robot in GoBots. Several of his roles were voice-only, such as Scrooge McDuck and Yoda in Star Wars. Outside of his work as an actor, Knight was also an avid amateur golfer who became one of the original board members of the World Series of Golf. He is survived by his wife AFAF "Ana" Darwin, four sons, Danny, Barry, and twins Tony and Tod, and his seven grandchildren. Ted Knight will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
