Thérèse of Lisieux

French discalced carmelite nun.

We grieve the passing of Thérèse Martin, who died in Lisieux, France on September 30th, 1897 at the age of 24. Thérèse was a beloved Carmelite religious sister and nun, and was canonized as a saint in 1925. She was born in Alençon in 1873 and entered the local Carmelite monastery at just 15 years old. During her short life, she was a figure of religious devotion and her spiritual autobiography, Story of a Soul, continues to be widely read today. She wrote extensively during her short life, and remains an icon of the Roman Catholic faith known for her strong devotion to God. Thérèse was widely admired and respected both during her life and after her death, and her spiritual writings have brought inspiration to generations. She will be deeply missed.
