Thomas E. Dewey, an American lawyer and politician, passed away on March 16th, 1971 at the age of 68. He was born in Owosso, Michigan on March 24th, 1902. Dewey earned his law degree at the University of Michigan. He opened his own law practice in 1932 which he continued to work at throughout his life, as well as serving various government positions. Dewey was a member of the Republican Party and after his election in 1942 he went on to serve as the 47th governor of New York from 1943-1955. He ran a successful presidential campaign in 1944, however, he was not elected. In 1948 he ran again and lost to Harry S. Truman. He was an active member of The American Legion and the American Bar Association, and would later receive honorary degrees from Bates College, the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University Law Center. He is survived by his wife, Frances, and their three children. He will remain fondly remembered as an American politician and statesman.
