Tommy Lynn Sells, a native of Fayette, Missouri, died on April 3, 2014 at the age of 49. Tommy was convicted of murder in 2000 and was one of Texas’ most infamous serial killers, having confessed to as many as 70 murders in 12 states across the country. Tommy had a troubled childhood, having been removed from his family’s custody at the age of 11 when his mother took him and his brothers on the run. After spending some time in multiple youth prisons, Tommy joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, where he was eventually discharged due to emotional instability. He returned to the U.S. and began his years-long killing spree, targeting individuals ranging from four to 64 years old. His victims included a 13-year-old girl who he abducted and murdered alongside her 9-year-old friend, a 9-year-old boy who was stabbed to death, and a seven-year-old whose murder he committed with a claw hammer. He was sentenced to death in 2000, and had been on death row since then. Tommy was an enigmatic man who never expressed remorse for his heinous crimes. He will be remembered as a menace to society and a dark reminder of the power of unchecked mental illness. Tommy is survived by his four brothers, who he had not seen in years.
When we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitless compassion for all beings. Sogyal Rinpoche
