Indian sports legend Milkha Singh, who earned the sobriquet "The Flying Sikh" for his success as a sprinter, passed away on 2021-06-18 at 85 years old. Milkha Singh was born in Punjab in 1935 and joined the Indian Army at the age of 17. While serving in the army, he represented India in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. In a remarkable performance, he placed fourth in the 400m final, missing the medal by one tenth of a second. He returned to India inspired by Olympic glory and was greeted with fanfare and great national pride. His success led him to popularize athletics and inspired generations of athletes from the country. He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award in 1958 and received numerous honors throughout his lifetime. Singh was subsequently remembered as a sporting legend and was the subject of both a Bollywood movie and an autobiography, "The Race of My Life". The Milkha Singh Charitable Trust was established in his honor, dedicated to encouraging young athletes. He will be remembered as a legendary athlete who served as an inspiration for countless aspiring athletes. May his memory be a blessing.
