Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (born 1951-08-16 in Katsina State, Nigeria) passed away on May 5th, 2010 at the age of 58. He was a former Military Governor of Katsina State, and subsequently a Nigerian President, serving from 2007 to 2010. Yar'Adua was a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He served as governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007, before being chosen as the PDP's presidential flag bearer in the 2007 general elections. He was sworn in as the 13th President of Nigeria on May 29th, 2007, and was subject to a controversial re-election in April of 2011, before he sadly passed away from an illness. Umaru was an accomplished diplomat, whose main interest was improving Nigeria's infrastructure and increasing its economic development. He was praised for his selfless work in restoring peace to militant-hit Nigeria. Though his tenure was short-lived, he was credited for his honest efforts to make Nigeria a better place to live. In 2010, Yar'Adua created the Nigerian National Poverty Eradication Programme to alleviate the plight of the Nigerian people. He also set up the Niger Delta Power Holding Company to reorganize the electricity sector and reduce electricity shortages. Yar'Adua is survived by his wife, Turai Yar'Adua, his seven brothers and sisters, his five children, and his countless admirers. He is remembered with admiration and respect, by all those whose lives he touched during his life.
