Umberto II, the last King of Italy, passed away on March 18th 1983 in exile in Geneva, Switzerland. Born in 1934 to Victor Emanuel, Prince of Naples and Princess Helena of Montenegro, Umberto became King of Italy on May 9th, 1946 upon the abdication of his father. Umberto was initially welcomed as king, due to his exuberance and charm, although he reigned for only 33 days before being removed and banished by a constitutional referendum to the Italian Republic. Despite the short rule, Umberto proved to be a controversial figure during and after his reign, with accusations of unpopular policies concerning modernisation and social reform. Although the King lost his titles and Imperial Honor, he remained active in diplomatic circles. He was a much-loved member of Italian society, and his work and values are still respected and cherished by Italians. After a life of grandeur, Umberto passed away at 78 years old. He will be remembered fondly by many, and his contributions to both Italian politics and culture will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
