Verghese Kurien, renowned Indian industrialist and activist, died peacefully on 2012-09-09 at the age of 90. Kurien is remembered as the 'Father of the White Revolution' in India, having helped to establish the Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL) dairy cooperative system in Kaira, Gujarat. His cooperative system is credited with helping to transform the rural economy of India, and its success enabled him to establish several other milk cooperatives that have since become benchmarks in the dairy industry. Kurien's other accomplishments included the founding of the National Dairy Development Board in 1965, as well as the Institute of Rural Management Anand and numerous other agricultural initiatives. He received numerous awards for his work, including the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri, World Food Prize and Magsaysay Award. Kurien's legacy of commitment to the empowerment of Indian farmers, and providing them with a viable way to earn a living, will never be forgotten.
