Violet Constance Jessop, born on October 2, 1887 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed away peacefully on May 5, 1971 in England. Violet is remembered for her remarkable life of adventure and grace that began in Latin America and continued on the high seas. Growing up in her native Argentina provided her with the skills and aplomb that would one day serve her in confronting the perils of the ocean. This life of ocean travel began in 1911 when she joined White Star Line as a stewardess and was among the many who boarded the fateful Titanic. With the help of lifeboats, she was able to evacuate the ship, and her future husband, William McCaw. During her career as a stewardess, Violet sailed the world with her husband and served on White Star Line and Royal Navy Ships. Her maritime career was further enhanced when, during World War I, she served as a British Red Cross Nurse aboard the hospital ships HMHS Britannic and HMHS Red Cross. Her story representing the bravery of her seafaring years, combined with her grace and determination, will remain a lasting legacy. Her spirit of adventure and courage will live on as one of inspiration and life-long learning. Violet is survived by her loving husband, William McCaw and her daughter, Freda Mallet.
