Walter Abel Becker, a prominent American musician, songwriter, and record producer, died on September 3, 2017 at the age of 67. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Becker co-founded the rock group Steely Dan in 1972 with fellow composer and guitarist Donald Fagen. Throughout the band's four decade-long career, they released nine studio albums and achieved notable success, including seven Grammy Awards. Their works have been praised for their sophisticated craftsmanship, a fusion of jazz, blues, and rock & roll style, and intelligent, often lyrical lyrics. Becker also embarked on a successful solo career in the 1990s with two solo albums, 1994's '11 Tracks of Whack' and 2008's 'Circus Money'. He also produced albums for several acts, including the Manhattan Transfer and China Crisis. In addition to his music career, Becker was an avid baseball fan and had a special interest in the New York Mets. Becker is survived by his two children with Elinor, daughter Saybie Mae, and son Kawai Matthew. He is also survived by his two sons, import Empire and Sea, with Elinor; and his brothers, who he considered among the greatest influences of his life.
