On August 2, 1923, Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States, passed away in San Francisco while on a speaking tour of the West Coast. He was 57 years old. Harding, a Republican from Ohio, was one of the most popular presidents in history due to his charm, informal style of politics, and his commitment to putting America back on track in the aftermath of World War I. He was also a great proponent of internationalism, and believed in the League of Nations and World Court as essential pillars of a stronger and more peaceful world. During his tenure in office, President Harding saw the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave American women the right to vote; the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles; an improvement in the economy via the Fordney-McCumber Act; the establishment of the first budgeting system; and the enactment of the first child welfare program in the United States. Harding died before completing his full term in office. He will be remembered as a president who strove to bring an end to a difficult period in America's history, and to inspire a renewed sense of patriotism and national pride. He is survived by his wife Florence Harding, and daughter Elizabeth Harding.
