It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Freidkin on August 7, 2023. He was 87 years old. William Friedkin was an American director, screenwriter, and producer best known for his Academy Award-winning 1971 film The French Connection and his Academy Award-nominated 1973 film The Exorcist. He also directed the 1980s action films To Live and Die in L.A. and Rampage. During his career, he was nominated for multiple Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards. He has also been honored by the National Society of Film Critics, Cannes Film Festival, and Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. Friedkin was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1935, to Louis and Dorothea Friedkin. After graduating from Goodman Theatre School in the mid-1950s, he began his career as an editor and assistant director. William Friedkin is remembered as one of the most notable directors of the 20th century. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and fans.
