William Cushman Westmoreland, born March 26, 1914, passed away on July 18, 2005, at the age of 91. A native of South Carolina, Westmoreland was a career United States Army officer, most renowned for his service in World War II and the Vietnam War. He was awarded three Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Distinguished Service Medal. From 1963 to 1968, Westmoreland served as the United States' military commander in Vietnam. In 1964, he received a promotion to four-star general, becoming one of the youngest generals ever to hold such a position. Upon his return to the United States, Westmoreland commanded the Army's Continental Army Command, and later the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Westmoreland retired in 1972 after 38 years of military service. He was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1999. Westmoreland was beloved by his family, celebrating his 91st birthday in March 2005 with his wife of 69 years, the former Katherine Hodges, and other family members at his home in South Carolina. Westmoreland was an exemplary soldier and leader who devoted his life to protecting his country and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
