It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of actor Brock Peters, at the age of 77. Born George Fisher in 1927 in New York City, Peters was drawn to the theater and the entertainment business from an early age. During his long career, he played a variety of leading and featured roles in films, television, and theatre, most notably his Academy Award-nominated performance in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) as the wrongly accused Tom Robinson. A role he would reprise in the 1986 television movie retelling. Peters' other notable film roles include his character, Scipio, in the blockbuster hit Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and as District Attorney Adam Fenton in revenge drama Farewell, My Lovely (1975). He also appeared in television series such as The Defenders, Dallas, Roots, Bonanza, and Dr. Kildare. Peters was unanimously praised for bringing dignity and depth to every character he played, and was twice received NAACP Image Awards for his performances in the films Shock Treatment (1981) and The Blue and the Gray (1982). He has consistently been recognized as one of the leading American black actors of his time. We are thankful for his many contributions to the entertainment industry, and for the wonderful, memorable characters he has left us with. He will be profoundly missed.
Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough. William Saroyan
