Willis Carrier, pioneer of modern air conditioning, passed away in New York City on October 29, 1950 at the age of 73. Born in Angola, New York in 1876, Willis Carrier attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1901. After receiving a degree in engineering, he went to work at the Buffalo Forge Company in 1901. In 1902, he invented the first electrical air conditioning system and continued to perfect the design in the years that followed. Willis founded the Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1915 and the Carrier Corporation in 1920. Through his innovations, modern air conditioning was made possible and his legacy has changed the world. His inventive thinking has impacted many industries, including transportation, medicine, and food production. In 2002, Willis Carrier was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in recognition of his many accomplishments. Willis Carrier's memory will live on in his pioneering designs that have helped improve the lives of generations of people.
