Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, a former president of Tunisia, died on September 19th, 2019 at the age of 83 after a long illness. Ben Ali was the president of Tunisia from 1987 until his exile following a popular uprising in 2011. He was born on September 3rd, 1936 in Hammam-Sousse, Tunisia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tunis, and served in the Air Force before entering politics as an ally of Habib Bourguiba. Ben Ali served as Minister of Interior from 1979 to 1986, then as Prime Minister of Tunisia from 1987 to 1999. He was formally elected President of Tunisia on November 21st, 1987 with 99.27% of the vote, and re-elected regularly until his overthrow in 2011. Ben Ali is remembered for several attempted reforms during his presidency, such as reducing legal inequality for women and implementing technological infrastructure, as well as attempting to reduce social inequalities in Tunisia. Ben Ali is survived by his family.
