A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a renowned religious leader and scholar of Vedic tradition passed away on November 14, 1977, at the age of 81. Prabhupada was born as Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, to a pious, spiritually nourished Hindu family in the small village of Calcutta, India. After graduating high school, he dedicated his life to learning and mastering Sanskrit and Vedic literature. Prabhupada later established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Prabhupada was a strong advocate for education and particularly for Vedic education. He translated many ancient Sanskrit scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Srimad Bhagavatam, and the Chaitanya Charitamrita from original Sanskrit into English. He also authored more than seventy volumes of English translation. Realizing the importance of sharing the knowledge of Vedic tradition with the English speaking world, Prabhupada set out on a journey across the world to promote his message. Throughout his life, Prabhupada travelled to multiple countries establishing ISKCON temples, and wrote extensively about Vedic philosophy and culture. Prabhupada’s work laid the foundation of a spiritual movement that continues to grow and thrive. His teachings have impacted countless lives all around the world. Prabhupada will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by his disciples and admirers.
