On June 8th, 1970, the world lost a great figure in psychology: Abraham Maslow. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1908, he rose to become a pioneering researcher in the field of human motivation and behavior. A professor at Brandeis University and at graduate-level programs at universities such as New York University and the City College of New York, Maslow’s research focused understand the motivations and hierarchies of needs, such as self-actualization and esteem, that drive and give meaning to our lives. His hugely important work was summarized in his book Motivation and Personality, as well as in the widely studied hierarchy of needs for humans. Other noted books he wrote were Toward a Psychology of Being and Eupsychian Management. His theories and hypotheses were the foundation of humanist psychology, which argued that the basic principle of psychological satisfaction was the need for self-fulfillment, rather than simply the avoidance of distress. Maslow’s influence in the field of psychology and influence on contemporary culture is far-reaching and his legacy will long remain in the works of modern theorists and authors. He was a prolific scholar and a devoted teacher, highly regarded by colleagues worldwide for his intellect and insight. Abraham Maslow died June 8th, 1970, aged 62.
