On October 4, 1944, Al Smith, age 70, passed away. A lifelong New Yorker, Smith was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. An American statesman, he was the 42nd Governor of New York and represented New York at the Democratic National Convention every presidential election from 1924 to 1940. He served as Governor from 1923–1928, and is well-known for his many progressive political reforms, including the modernization of the state government, the consolidation of city and state departments, the updating of the state's infrastructure, and the installation of a comprehensive educational system. He was also a long-time advocate for social justice and civil rights. Smith ran for President of the United States in both 1928 and 1932. He was unsuccessful in both bids, but his campaigns were generally credited as paving the way for the success of later Catholic presidential candidates. He was an iconic figure in American politics, leaving behind a legacy of public service and civil rights advocacy that continues to inspire today. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him and those who continue to benefit from his efforts.
