Valery Legasov, a prominent physicist and scientist, died peacefully on April 27, 1988 at the age of 51. Born and raised in Moscow, he earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Moscow State University. Legasov spent several years conducting nuclear weapon research and was a close confidant of the head of the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1986, Legasov was selected to lead the Soviet Union's efforts to investigate and mitigate the Chernobyl disaster. In 1987, Legasov published his official report on the disaster which became known as the "Legasov Report." Legasov was revered for his dedication to uncovering and understanding the intricacies of the disaster and for his telegenic nature which helped to draw public attention to the disaster. Legasov's legacy and bravery will continue to be remembered. He is survived by friends and family.
