He was a leading figure in the early 20th-century avant-garde with his distinctive, often elongated, figurative works. He is remembered as one of the most influential artists of the modernist movement. Modigliani began his career in Florence and moved to Paris in 1906. There he encountered many other important artists at the time such as Pablo Picasso and Maurice Utrillo which would have a major impact on his style and work. He quickly found recognition for his portraits, nudes, and sculptures. His paintings made use of large blocks of color and thick black contours, and many of his subjects had a distinctive expression. His works are included in the collections of prominent museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Tate Modern in London, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
