Anita Ekberg, an international actress best known for her role in Federico Fellini’s 1960 masterpiece film “La Dolce Vita”, passed away on January 11, 2015, at the age of 83. Born in Malmö, Sweden, Ekberg began her entertainment career as a model and beauty contestant—winning the Miss Sweden contest in 1950 and then placing sixth in the 1950 Miss Universe pageant—before becoming a film actress. Ekberg starred in numerous on-screen and stage roles, throughout Italy, the United States, and the rest of Europe, during her career that spanned six decades. She notably starred opposite Marcello Mastroianni in “La Dolce Vita,” for which she won a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress. Ekberg was also recognized for her humanitarian work and engagements, including a UNESCO goodwill ambassador designation to promote the empowerment of women and children. She mentored many aspiring actors, apprenticing with her own acting coach for years. Her lasting legacy will be as an important figure in the landscape of international cinema.
