Anna May Wong, a groundbreaking actress comfortable in both Asian and Western roles, passed away on February 3rd, 1961 at the age of 56. Born in 1905 in Los Angeles, Anna was the daughter of immigrant parents from Taishan, China. She worked hard to break down racial and gender barriers in the film industry, and her career spanned over four decades. She gained attention for becoming the first Chinese-American Hollywood star, and her roles in films such as The Thief of Bagdad, Shanghai Express, and Daughter of the Dragon attest to her success. She was also noteworthy in television shows such as The New Adventures of Charlie Chan and Mr. Wong. Anna received numerous awards throughout her lifetime, including the Dr. Carolyn G. Brogdon Humanitarian Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a posthumous induction to the California Hall of Fame. Anna will live on in her work, remembered as a trailblazing artist.
