Anthony Perkins, the iconic American actor best known for his captivating and sinister portrayal of the evil genius, Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Psycho, passed away peacefully in travails on September 12, 1992, at the age of 60. Born in New York City in 1932, Perkins had a passion for the theatre from a young age. He studied at the famed Actors Studio and took elocution lessons, eventually earning roles on Broadway. This led to Perkins' cinematic breakthrough role as Eugene Gant in the adaptation of Look Homeward, Angel. Perkins then had other big, diverse roles such as the role of Joe Casimir in Friendly Persuasion, that of Stanley Levine in Desire Under the Elms, and he also took on lighter roles such as the bumbling reporter in On the Beach. His most famous role, the disturbed motelier Norman Bates in Psycho, and its sequels, as well as his transformational performances in movies such as The Matchmaker, made him one of the icons of the late 1950s and early 1960s. He also earned notoriety for his personal and political beliefs. Perkins was an advocate for Civil Rights, and he was both a self-avowed member of the Democratic Party and a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. An international star, Perkins received 3 Golden Globe nominations, and one BAFTA award nomination for his work in the entertainment industry, and he will be forever remembered by the many fans who enjoyed his memorable performances.
