Antonio Gramsci, noted philosopher and socialist political leader, passed away on April 27, 1937 at the age of 46. A native of Sardinia, Gramsci studied linguistics and philosophy at the University of Turin, and went on to become one of the iconic figures of the 20th century Italian Socialist movement. During his lifetime, he published various works on literature and civic culture, and became a key leader in the Italian Socialist Party, culminating in his appointment as Secretary of the Socialist Party of Sardinia in 1924. In 1926, Gramsci was arrested by Mussolini's government and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Despite his incarceration, he continued to write extensively from prison, and produced acclaimed works such as The Prison Notebooks, a series of writings on culture, history and political philosophy. His legacy lives on, enshrined in his works around the world and in the philosophical ideas and movements that he championed throughout his lifetime.
