The country mourns the death of Arun Jaitley, the influential leader, former union minister, veteran politician and cricket administrator. Jaitley passed away on 24th August 2019 after a long period of illness at the age of 66. Jaitley served as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs in the BJP-led NDA government from 2014 to 2019. He was also a close aide and confidant to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He contributed immensely to India’s economic reforms, and was a major part of rolling out the flagship Goods and Services Tax (GST). His legal acumen combined with his keen interest in all aspects of public policy found ample expression in his role as Finance Minister. Prior to his term as Union Minister, Jaitley served in various roles including as the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, and later on as the Minister of Defence and Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. Not widely known, but Jaitley was a cricket enthusiast and a cricket administrator. He served as the Vice President and later as the President of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) for 14 years. Arun Jaitley was a beacon of integrity, fairness and wisdom. He will always be remembered for his immeasurable contributions to India. He will be deeply missed.
