Ram Jethmalani, widely regarded as one of India’s most eminent lawyers, passed away on 8 September 2019 at the age of 95. The charismatic and fearless litigator, renowned for his sharp legal acumen and highly successful defense strategies, had a career spanning almost seven decades. His contributions to the legal profession, in India and abroad, will always be remembered. Mr Jethmalani was born in Sindh, Pakistan, in 1923. He completed his Masters degree in Law in 1944 and went on to win academic distinctions and gain wide experience in criminal law, public law, and constitutional law. In 1965, he was elected as a Member of Parliament in India and was appointed as the Union Law Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee led Government in 1998. An adjunct professor of several prestigious universities, he also became India’s Law Minister in the United Front Government in 1996. Mr Jethmalani is survived by his lawyer son Mahesh and his daughter, Rani. He will be remembered for his profound knowledge of the law and for his stellar contributions to the legal world in India.
