Balu Mahendra, a celebrated international filmmaker, passed away on February 13th, 2014 at the age of 74. Mahendra's compositions were a renowned feature in the Tamil film industry. His earliest work as a cinematographer won him recognition in the National Film Awards, the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and Indian International Film Festival Awards. His unconditional love towards films took him to the next level and sought his career in direction. Mahendra directed several feature films including Veedu (1978), Moondram Pirai (1982), and Nadodikattu (1987). In his later life, he worked as an independent music director. Mahendra received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012 for his immense contribution to the film industry. He was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in the same year. Mahendra’s immersion in the film industry will be remembered for years to come. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and four granddaughters.
