Barbara Hale (1922-2017), the Emmy Award-winning actress who was best known for her portrayal of legal secretary Della Street on television’s “Perry Mason,” died Jan. 26 at 94. Hale’s acting career spanned several decades, beginning with her portrayal of Rona Robinson in the 1946 film “The Window.” She won an Emmy Award for her role in the television series “Equal Justice.” In addition to her performance as Della Street on “Perry Mason,” Hale was a frequent presence in such classic television Westerns as “Cheyenne,” “Bonanza,” “Rawhide,” and “Wagon Train.” She also had roles in films such as “The Window” (1946), “My Favorite Brunette” (1947) and “Air Hostess” (1949). Hale was a native of DeKalb, Illinois, and graduated from Rockford College. She was the widow of actor Bill Williams, with whom she had two children.
