He was best known for his 20-year-long career in Hollywood during the 1930s and 40s, for playing multiple villains and heroes in films and radio shows. He notably starred in 'Sherlock Holmes' films, 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' and 'The Mark of Zorro.' In 1948, he made a remarkable return to Broadway, famously appearing in a revival of 'Hamlet.' Rathbone also served in the First World War, earning medals for bravery, and was renowned for his charitable work, both during and after his Hollywood days.
