Bob Kane, who co-created one of the world’s most iconic comic book characters, Batman, passed away on November 3, 1998, at the age of 83. Born Robert Kahn in 1915 in New York City, Kane showed an early interest in cartoons and art, and at age 15 created his first comic book story. He landed a job at DC Comics in 1935, and five years later created Batman with the help of artist Bill Finger. Kane, who is also credited with the creation of Batman’s sidekick, Robin, wrote Batman stories for more than 20 years and drew the character’s adventures until his retirement in 1964. The character of Batman (as well as Robin) went on to appear in television shows, movies, books, action figures, and video games. Kane was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1994. Kane is survived by his wife Elizabeth, three children, and six grandchildren.
