He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1943, and was a standout football player by the time he entered Wake Forest University as an All-American running back in 1961. Two years later, Piccolo became the first white player to integrate the football team at Wake Forest. Piccolo then joined the Chicago Bears in 1965, where he found his true passion in football. Regarded as one of the most determined and dedicated players in the sport, Piccolo quickly became a leader both on and off the field. He was a beloved teammate to many, respected by all, and nicknamed the "Heart of Gold". Piccolo's mortality was tested when he was diagnosed with embryonal cell carcinoma and sadly died after confronting the disease. His death left an indelible mark on the comunity, and his memory continues to be remembered to this day.
