Calamity Jane, born Martha Jane Canary, passed away August 1, 1903, at the age of 51. Originally from Missouri, the frontierswoman moved to the Dakota territory in the late 1870s, where she acquired her nickname 'Calamity Jane'. Jane earned a reputation for her skills as a hunter, driver, and horsewoman over the next two decades. She was known to accompany Wild Bill Hickok on scouting trips, and her exploits were highlighted in the dime novels of the time. After moving to Montana in the 1890s, Calamity Jane became an alcoholic and was seen as a public nuisance. Later in life, she was doing charity work with sick children in the Denver area of Colorado. As an adventurous, larger-than-life figure of the Wild West, Calamity Jane's legacy continues to this day in cowboy lore and popular media.
