Caleb Swanigan (1997 - 2022), an Indianapolis native, died at the age of 25 on June 20, 2022. As a student athlete at Purdue University, Caleb developed a growing reputation and strong skills on the court. He was invaluable on the team, leading them in rebounds and helping them move forward. After his stellar performance in the 2016-2017 season, he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA Draft of 2017. This set a milestone for Caleb, becoming the first player to be drafted by the NBA after competing in the Big Ten Conference while enrolled part-time in college. It was here that Caleb found great success before his passing. Off the court, Caleb was an ambassador for the Special Olympics and was an active campaigner of the #MyClothesMyChoice initiative. Evidence of Caleb’s exceptional character was captured in a quote from his coach, Matt Painter. “Caleb is one of the best young men I’ve ever been around in my life…his passion for helping people, his need to achieve on the court and in the classroom set an example for others.” Caleb leaves behind a legacy that will carry on for generations. He will be remembered for his hard work, commitment, talent, and kindness.

Death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life’s change agent, it clears out the old to make way for the new. Steve Jobs
