Cecil B. DeMille, 77, passed away on January 21st, 1959. He was an American film director, writer, and producer who is renowned for having had a prolific career in Hollywood from the silent era to the 1950s. As a renowned pioneer of the film industry, DeMille was best known for his spectacular and iconic epics. After starting his career as a stage actor, he wrote, directed, produced and edited over 70 feature films that earned him a multitude of awards. He is one of the few filmmakers who was known to have worked in both the silent and sound eras, spanning nearly five decades. Remembered as the man behind some of the most iconic films in history, including The Ten Commandments (1923), The King of Kings (1927), and The Greatest Show On Earth (1952), DeMille was lauded for his directorial style and flamboyant production techniques. DeMille's remarkable works gained him national and international acclaim, and he was the recipient of several awards, such as an Academy Award for Best Picture for The Greatest Show On Earth, as well as the Academy's Special Award for his unique showmanship. He will be remembered as one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, whose works changed the face of cinema forever.
