On March 27th, 2002, the beloved writer, director and producer, Billy Wilder, passed away at the age of 95. He was a pioneer in Hollywood, crafting some of the most iconic films of the 20th century. Billy Wilder was born on June 22nd, 1906 in Sucha Beskidzka, Poland. He began his career in Berlin in the 1920s writing for newspapers and the stage. In 1933, he fled Nazi Germany and moved to Hollywood, where he first worked as a screenwriter for Paramount Pictures. From there he moved up to a directing contract and his first feature film, The Major and the Minor, was released in 1942. Throughout his career, Wilder wrote and/or directed a variety of films including Double Indemnity (1944), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), The Apartment (1960), Some Like It Hot (1959), Irma La Douce (1963) and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). As his career evolved, Wilder garnered 16 Academy Award Nominations, of which he won 6. He will be remembered for his wit, skill and enduring influence on the world of film. His successes continue to inspire generations of creators. Billy Wilder is survived by his wife Audrey Young Wilder, sister Lieselotte, and daughters Victoria & Lila. He will live on in the hearts of all who knew and admired him.
