Norman Mailer, one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, died on November 10th, 2007 at the age of 84. Mailer was born January 31st, 1923 in Long Branch, New Jersey, and his family moved to Brooklyn two years later. He graduated from Harvard University in 1943 and enlisted in the army, in which he served for two and a half years before returning to New York and starting his career as a journalist and novelist. Over the course of his career, Mailer published 30 books, two of which, The Armies of the Night and The Executioner's Song, earned him a Pulitzer Prize. He also wrote thousands of articles for magazines and newspapers and was active in the literary community. Mailer is survived by nine children, his sisters, and his third wife, Norris Church Mailer. He will be remembered for his wit, his wisdom, and his extensive literary contributions.
