On February 20, 1966, Chester W. Nimitz passed away at the age of 80. Born in Texas in 1885, Nimitz had a distinct career and legacy. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an ensign in 1905. During his career, he attained the rank of five-star Fleet Admiral and was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. He had a strategic foresight and sense of initiative that enabled U.S. naval victories in the Pacific campaign, making him a highly respected figure for his leadership. He later went on to become the Chief of Naval Operations. Nimitz was also a recipient of numerous military honors. He received the Navy Cross, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Freedom Award, as well as foreign accolades, such as Japan's Order of the Golden Kite. He will be remembered for his accomplishments in the naval forces and his immense contributions to the war effort during World War II.
